Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Muscle pain, weakness, and tension can definitely slow down recovery and make day-to-day activities more difficult. Electrical Muscle Stimulation, or EMS, is a non-invasive therapy that helps activate muscles, reduce discomfort, and support healing.

We use EMS at Sandia Injury Center as a supportive addition to many comprehensive treatment plans. Specifically, we recommend it for those who want to improve muscle function and hope for a quicker recovery.

What Is Electrical Muscle Stimulation?

Electrical muscle stimulation is a type of therapy that uses low-level electrical impulses to stimulate the muscles to contract. Small electrode pads are placed on the skin near the area that is affected, and then the pads deliver electrical signals to the muscles that cause them to contract and relax.

These impulses mimic the body’s natural signals from the nervous system, which helps to retrain the muscles. It also helps to improve circulation and reduce pain without needing any medication.

How EMS Supports Recovery

When the muscles are injured or weakened, they don’t work as they should. This can lead to stiffness in the body, poor circulation, and delayed healing. EMS helps to restore the activity in these muscles, which encourages them to work more efficiently.

EMS therapy works by:

  • Stimulating muscle contractions to prevent atrophy

  • Increasing blood flow to the affected area

  • Reducing muscle spasms and tension

  • Supporting the body’s natural healing processes

  • Improving communication between nerves and muscles

Since EMS targets specific areas, we can create a plan to use it in order to meet each patient’s needs.

Conditions That Benefit From EMS

Electrical muscle stimulation is a common therapy that is used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. It is very helpful for those who are recovering from injuries or those who are dealing with chronic muscle tension.

Conditions that may benefit from this therapy include:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Muscle strains and sprains

  • Joint injuries

  • Sciatica/nerve-discomfort

  • Post-injury muscle weakness

  • Recovery after auto accidents or workplace injuries

  • Chronic pain conditions

EMS can also be used to complement other therapies by preparing muscles for treatment or for supporting recovery after.

What to Expect During Treatment

We make EMS sessions simple and comfortable for our patients. Typically, they last between 10 and 20 minutes, and during the session, we place the electrodes on the skin directly over the muscles we are targeting.

During a session, patients may experience:

  • A mild tingling or pulsing sensation

  • Gentle muscle contractions

  • A feeling of relaxation as tension is reduced

This is not meant to be a painful treatment. We can adjust the intensity of the stimulation to ensure that the patient is comfortable during the process.

Benefits of Electrical Muscle Stimulation

EMS has a wide range of benefits that often makes it a very valuable addition to many patient treatment plans.

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Drug-free pain relief

  • Reduced muscle tension and spasms

  • Improved circulation and oxygen delivery

  • Enhanced muscle strength and function

  • Faster recovery from injury

  • Support for long-term rehabilitation

Most patients who add EMS to their treatment plans quickly feel more comfortable and experience improved mobility.

Enhancing Other Treatments

We like to combine EMS with other therapies at Sandia Injury Center, and we feel that by doing this, we can improve overall results. It works well with treatments for soft tissues as well as with chiropractic adjustments.

EMS can help:

  • Relax muscles before spinal adjustments

  • Reduce soreness after treatment

  • Improve muscle activation during rehabilitation

  • Support better movement patterns

This full and comprehensive approach allows for more effective and lasting outcomes.

Supporting Muscle Health Between Visits

Patients can maintain the benefits they receive from EMS at home.

Maintain benefits by doing the following:

  • Staying active with appropriate exercise

  • Stretching regularly to maintain flexibility

  • Maintaining proper posture

  • Staying hydrated to support muscle function

  • Following prescribed at-home exercise programs

These habits help reinforce treatment and reduce the likelihood of recurring issues.
